Today, we are going to see how to recover our Google account password or at least regain access to it. This blog post will be divided into two steps. In the first step, we will address password recovery when it is possible. In the second step, we will discuss account recovery when password recovery is not possible.
To recover your password, you only have one option: to have previously made a copy or saved it with a password manager. There are various password managers available, and some even save your passwords without you even realizing it. This is the case with the manager present in every internet browser.
In this example, I will launch Google Chrome and go to Gmail. From there, I will access the password manager by clicking on the menu in the top right corner, then going to settings and selecting the password section. By default, the password manager is always enabled, but you may have disabled it at some point. However, even if it is disabled, you can still access the passwords that were previously saved.
Here, you can see which sites and usernames are associated with each password. By clicking on them, you can access the password you are looking for. If needed, you can view it since it is already saved in the browser. You can simply reactivate the password manager for automatic filling by returning to the login page and selecting the autofill option. The manager will then directly propose your credentials.
If, despite these steps, it is still not possible to recover your password, Google offers different ways to verify your account. You can access the account manager quickly through the link in the description of this blog post. In the security tab, under the « Sign-in & security » section, besides password sign-in, you can activate access to your account using your phone. A message will be displayed on your phone, asking you to confirm this authorization.
Additionally, you have the option to verify your account using your phone number or a secondary email address. These will serve to reset your password. For example, if I log out of my account and try to log back in with my username but forget my password, I can select the « Forgot password » option. The platform will ask me to perform a test. If I make a mistake, it will offer to send a validation code to the email or phone number I previously provided. By entering and validating this code, I can then renew and save a new password to access my Google account.
